Artist's Statement
I contributed to this contest to show my support for the Jewish people, and their tragic experience during the Holocaust. Approximately 6 million Jews were killed by groups of Nazis. My drawing of the yellow butterfly was to represent the 1.5 million children who lost their lives. In my entry, I included one of the heroes, who took part in helping as many Jews as they could, Raoul Wallenberg. Wallenberg was a businessman, who issued multiple methods of rescue. Wallenberg also purchased and rented over 30 buildings, and proclaimed them as “extraterritorial” under the protection of the Swedish legation, while keeping thousands of Jews sheltered in these buildings. Wallenberg planned more amazing deeds, leading him to save tens of thousands of Jews, and being a symbol of hope. The Holocaust affected innocent children and families, and that it is something we should never start or go through again.
