"A Hero Between the Lines of Paper and Ink" by Gwyn Kennedy, Parkway High School

Artist's Statement

Walter Benjamin may not have been categorized a hero in terms of bravery and vigilance during the early beginnings of the Holocaust, but as a hero in between the lines of paper and ink. He swore page after page that the Holocaust, and the rise of facism it brought was, in his words, a catastrophe. This piece represents his philosophy ink stroke for ink stroke. Along with his well-known quote, “All human knowledge takes the form of interpretation.” Through subtle symbolism throughout, this piece derives the haughty symbolism that is expressed through Benjamin’s philosophy. Including a reference to his essay, “Karl Kraus” (1931). Which features a deer-like creature known as, “The Creaturely”. Whilst Benjamin had a sudden death back in 1940, his philosophy and essays are still greatly accounted for to this day.
