Composer's Statement

I interpreted this year’s prompt through the lens of the countless unnamed liberators who bore witness to the aftermath of Germany’s atrocities. Their anonymity allowed me to question who they were and, more pressingly, how they remained capable of love after seeing humanity at its worst. Researching figures such as Felix Sparks and Hugh Llewellyn Glyn Hughes grounded my writing in lived testimony, yet my lyrics dwell in inquiry: how do you love like this? Most explicitly, the chorus illustrates the starry-eyed grace of the nameless heroes amid absolute horror, echoing “repair the world” as both action and introspection. Musically, I contrast heavy subject matter with pop-leaning, jazz-tinged warmth and lush seventh chords, blurring despair with hope to invite reflection on history’s relevance today.
