"Beneath the Apple Tree" by Iriana Cheng, Greenacres Middle School

Artist's Statement

This entry showcases Irena Sendler, an unsung hero who rewrote the fate of thousands during the Holocaust and taught us that everyone is equal. In this drawing, I featured Irena Sendler, a milk bottle, a strip of tissue paper with names written on it, and an apple tree, all surrounded by a dark, graphite background to represent the Holocaust and its effect. I chose to draw a milk bottle, tissue paper, and an apple tree to show what Irena Sendler used to preserve the identities of the Jews she saved. Irena Sender and the tree are emphasized to portray her as a hero, as she was the light in many people’s lives despite being affected by the Holocaust herself, and to recognize that the apple tree symbolizes humanity. The apple tree’s leaves being drawn out and different is a symbol of humanity, showing that despite being all different, we’re all humans.
