Author's Statement

My inspiration for this piece was supposed enemies who helped those they were told to oppress as Major Karl Plagge and Zura Karuhimbi did. This is the highest form of moral courage, when all of your neighbors and friends are following one course of action but you do the opposite because you know that it is right to do so. It is fighting not only complacency and inaction, but also pressure from one's own people. Those who choose this fight, even if they do not fully win, deserve our recognition and remembrance.
