Poet's Statement

Bella Hazan and Lonka Korzybrodska were two Jewish girls who went through the Holocaust smuggling documents, food, etc. to aid others. In this poem, Bella Hazan is writing to her friend Lonka Korzybrodska who aided her with smuggling goods but died during the Holocaust. My second poem was written from the perspective of Miss Major, a Black trans woman known for her help with the Stonewall Riot, trans rights in prison and Black Lives Matters protests. In this poem, she is writing to her friend Frank who inspired her to use her voice for good.
