Poet's Statement
The first part of this poem describes a group of three girls, Freddie Oversteegen, Truus Oversteegen, and Hannie Schaft, who rode their bikes around the city and spread anti-Nazi information, killed Nazis, and sabotaged Nazi resources. The second part is about Audre Lorde, a poet who advocated for the rights of Black Americans, LGBTQ+ people, and women. The third part of this poem shows how all of these people stood up for what they believed. I think that the theme of this piece is important to our society. In a world of hate, division and violence, we need people who will speak the truth about what is right.
