Artist's Statement
My piece features Truus and Freddie Oversteegen, Maude Ballou, and Claudette Colvin, who were at the heart of the Dutch resistance during WWII and the Civil Rights Movement. The Oversteegen sisters killed Nazis, therefore putting their lives on the line to aid the resistance. Maude Ballou was Martin Luther King Jr.'s first assistant. She was endangered by working for him and for the Civil Rights Movement. Claudette Colvin refused to give up her bus seat before Rosa Parks did, but she wasn't made the face of the bus boycott because of colorism and her background. These 4 women showed moral courage in their times by risking their safety for others.
